Archaeological Fieldwork

  • Central Achaia Phthiotis Survey (Greece)

The CAPS project, directed by Margriet Haagsma and Sophia Karapanou, explores the region around Kallithea Farsalon to increase our understanding of environmental, geopolitical, cultural, and social factors for the communities living in this area from prehistory to the modern period. The project’s approaches include intensive and extensive survey, LiDAR, groundtruthing, and limited excavation. The region includes an extensive funerary landscape, for which I led the clearing of an Early Iron Age tholos tomb.

  • Kastro Kallithea Archaeological Project (Greece)

Since 2009, I have been involved in the Kastro Kallithea Archaeological Project in Thessaly, Greece, under the direction of Margriet Haagsma and Sophia Karapanou. Kallithea consists of a fortified settlement on a hill where the Canadian excavations focused on the excavations of a large domestic structure (Hellenistic). In addition to the excavations, I also served as one of the project’s primary archaeological illustrators, and conducted studies of the glass finds and the pithoi from the site with Colette Kruyshaar.

  • Halos Archaeological Project (Greece)

The site of New Halos has been archaeologically investigated since 1976 by the Universities of Groningen and Amsterdam. New Halos was found in 302 BC after the destruction of the original town of Halos by Parmenion in 346 BC. The current phase of the project (carried out by a Greek-Dutch-Canadian team) is the excavation of Old Halos, around Magoula Plataniotiki. I participated in the excavations of 2016 as a trench supervisor.

  • Mytilene Project (Greece)

Directed by Hector Williams, the Mytilene Project has been conducting fieldwork on Mytilene, Lesbos since 1984, uncovering the city’s long period of occupation. Sites revealed by the project include a sanctuary of Demeter and Kore, whose finds include thousands of lamps, terracotta figurines, and loomweights. I assisted in the processing and study of the many lamps in the study season of 2011.

  • Apulum Mithraeum III Project (Romania)

Directed by Matthew McCarty and Mariana Egri, the project focused on excavating the remains of a mithraeum (temple to Mithras) in the municipium of Apulum (mod. Alba Iulia), as well the post-Roman reuse of the area. I participated in the excavations of 2014 as an excavator.
